Is there any melee combat in Skull and Bones?

Does your ship get to have all the fun?

From the get-go in Skull and Bones, you are given a taste of the ship combat that the game is centered around. Whether you’re fighting off NPC ships or battling real players in some PvP, your ship is where a majority of the combat in Skull and Bones takes place. However, some players are wondering if they can take part in any melee combat as well.

Skull and Bones takes inspiration from Assassin’s Creed Black Flag after all, and that game had both ship and melee combat. More specifically, Black Flag allowed you to board an enemy ship and take on the ship’s crew with your sword and musket to successfully capture it. So, does Skull and Bones offer the same type of combat or are you just limited to fighting with your ship?

Unfortunately, Skull and Bones does not feature any sort of melee combat throughout the entire game. You are completely confined to fighting other ships with the weapons you have available on your ship, which mostly includes cannons.

Even when you go to board another ship after taking its HP down enough, you don’t engage in any melee combat with the ship’s crew. Instead, a small cutscene plays that shows your crew taking down the other ship, and then the screen fades to black. When the screen returns, your ship is floating away from the now-sinking enemy ship.

It’s possible that Ubisoft adds melee combat to Skull and Bones with a future update, but nothing is confirmed nor imminent at this time. While Ubisoft is planning to add an offline single-player mode, there’s no indication that melee combat would be included with that update or any future ones. However, nothing has been ruled out either, so don’t count out the idea just yet.
