After the runaway success of Baldur’s Gate 3, it was always a question of when, not if, Wizards of the Coast would return to the Sword Coast. A new rumor suggests that return won’t only mean Baldur’s Gate 4 down the line, but a full remake of the older games, starting with the second.
What’s been reported
According to PC Gamer, a source familiar with the project says WotC is working on a Baldur’s Gate 2 remake. The most interesting detail is the name attached to it: Kevin Martens, co-lead designer on the original BG2, has reportedly signed on. His résumé also includes Throne of Bhaal, Jade Empire, Neverwinter Nights, and Mass Effect, before a move to Blizzard where he served as lead content designer on Diablo 3.
Martens was already back in the WotC fold, contributing to Archetype Entertainment’s RPG Exodus, so the connection isn’t a stretch.
Why both games likely come together
Remaking only the sequel would be an odd move, since BG2 picks up directly from the first game. The reporting points to both titles being developed concurrently, which would mean an enormous amount of D&D roleplaying if they launch as a pair.
What fans should temper
This isn’t the first revisit. Beamdog’s Enhanced Editions already polished the originals years ago, but a remake leaves room for bigger changes. Don’t expect a straight conversion to BG3’s turn-based combat, though. Real-time-with-pause, ideally with an optional turn-based mode, would be the safer bet to keep everyone happy.
No release window has surfaced, and Hasbro declined to comment on the rumor.
