The Blood of Dawnwalker sells a million copies in its first three days

Rebel Wolves and publisher Bandai Namco announced on September 5 that The Blood of Dawnwalker has passed one million copies sold worldwide.

The game launched on September 3 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, putting the milestone inside its first three days on sale. That is a strong opening for a new IP at full price from a studio with no previous release.

Rebel Wolves was founded in Warsaw in 2022 by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, game director on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, with a team of former CD Projekt Red colleagues. The Witcher comparisons have followed the game ever since.

The numbers so far

Neither the studio nor Bandai Namco has published a platform split or a revenue figure. Third-party estimates put Steam at roughly 30% of the total, somewhere near 300,000 units, with consoles carrying the rest. Treat those as estimates, not confirmed numbers.

Good reviews, rough PC performance

Critically the game has landed well. PC Gamer’s Shaun Prescott gave it 83% in his review, praising the worldbuilding and storytelling while arguing that Rebel Wolves did not push its time mechanic as far as it should have.

Player sentiment is more mixed, and the reason is optimization. The recurring complaints on Steam:

  • Stuttering and crashes on machines that meet the recommended specs
  • Poor performance in windowed and borderless modes
  • No HDR support
  • A rough experience on handhelds

Rebel Wolves has moved fast. The studio posted workarounds directly to players, including running the game in fullscreen and updating BIOS to avoid crashes, then shipped hotfixes 1.0.2 and 1.0.3 within days of launch. Bigger optimization work has been promised.

Modders are already removing the time limit

The other flashpoint is the idea the game was sold on. Coen has a limited number of in-game days to save his family, and some of the first mods released strip that pressure out entirely.

Prescott’s suspicion was that Rebel Wolves had already softened the clock to avoid losing players to it.

If a mechanic that has been dialled back is still the first thing modders delete, the studio has a question to answer before the next chapter of the saga.
