“Death was the only step”: Bungie admits Marathon missed the mark and plans a reset

Bungie is rethinking Marathon.

In a long update on September 25, the studio admitted that the game’s original extraction-focused vision didn’t connect with enough players. Now it wants Marathon to be much more than the high-stakes PvEvP shooter it launched as in March.

What went wrong

The update came with a Developer Insights video where the team spoke openly about launch.

“Launch didn’t go the way we wanted it to,” one developer said. The team admitted that being so close to the game made it hard to see how demanding it had become for new players.

The biggest issue was difficulty. Developers described a loop of constant failure that didn’t appeal to as many people as they had hoped.

Bungie’s own summary is blunt: “While death is the first step, for many players, death was the only step.”

Too niche for the masses

Marathon was meant to bring extraction shooters to a wider audience. That didn’t happen.

“One of the things we learned at launch is that our game is pretty niche,” Bungie admits in the video. The team says it doubled down on the idea that fighting other Runners would carry the experience, even as feedback from the Alpha pointed elsewhere.

“We all thought we were going to bring extractions to the masses and we didn’t,” another developer said.

The roadmap

Bungie isn’t removing extraction. It’s adding more ways to play.

WhenWhat’s coming
OctoberProgression refresh
DecemberPermanent PvE mode
DecemberExperimental Team Deathmatch
March 2027Much larger overhaul

More modes, less pressure

At launch, there was really only one way to play: an extraction mode. The new mode select screen is meant to change that.

Bungie wants to offer:

  • Quick, lower-pressure runs
  • Full-squad evenings to test builds and harder encounters
  • Competitive play without risking an entire extraction run

For new players, it also means a place to learn weapons, Shells and maps without constantly losing everything.

Can it turn around?

The core of Marathon was never the problem. Its gunplay and extraction loop were well received, but punishing systems, repetitive missions, a poor UI and difficult onboarding made it a hard sell outside hardcore fans.

The October refresh is the first test. The March 2027 overhaul will show whether Bungie can truly broaden Marathon’s appeal.

Marathon is available on PC via Steam, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
