Starfield has 82 skills total, broken up into five skill trees. Each individual skill within each skill tree also has four ranks, meaning there’s a LOT of customization options and skill combos to choose from. On the other hand, it can be a bit overwhelming to know which skills are right for you.

If you really want to improve your gameplay by giving yourself more options and excelling at more challenges early on, here are the skills you should choose.

First, you will definitely want stealth. This is located in the Physical skill tree in Tier 1. Putting one skill point into stealth will unlock a stealth bar that allows you to sneak by enemies. In the same vein, you’ll want persuasion. Located in the Social skill tree in Tier 1, this skill will make you better at convincing people during conversations, making some missions a lot easier.

Ballistics and rifle certification are also great skills to have early on. These are both found in the Combat skill tree. This will cover the vast majority of weapons you’ll use in the game, making you a lot better in violent situations.

Piloting and medicine are also great to focus on. Medicine will really help you heal a lot more efficiently while piloting at its max will get you better ships and parts so you have the upper hand in space combat challenges.

Of course, the skills you choose to level up truly depend on how you wish to play the game. These are just pretty useful all around if you’re unsure where to begin!

Remember, you can’t really respec your skill points in Starfield. Choose wisely and figure out which skills will really help you the most on your journey. I personally save skill points after leveling up sometimes because you need to complete challenges in order to unlock the next tier of certain skills that I want. So take time to really think!
