How to install Hogwarts Legacy mods

The Wizarding World is your oyster

With Hogwarts Legacy being out for a week at this point, the modding community has now come out in full force. The first few days of the game didn’t really feature any mods, as Hogwarts Legacy players were still figuring out exactly what the game could do. However, with players now having a firm grasp on the new Wizarding World adventure, mods have begun to pop up like weeds.

If you’re unfamiliar with mods, they are essentially community-made add-ons for a game. These add-ons can come in many different forms, from entertainment to performance to gameplay. Mod communities like the ones in The Elder Scrolls and Fallout have even designed full-on DLCs for titles, giving fans hours of new and fresh gameplay to experience.

While Hogwarts Legacy isn’t to that point yet, there are some incredible mods you can download right now in the game’s infancy. However, before you get there, you need to know how to install mods.

Your first step in downloading a mod in Hogwarts Legacy is to figure out what website you will be using. Generally, Nexus Mods has the biggest mod community for any game, so we recommend you at least start there. It’s also the safest website to download mods from. You’ll need to make a Nexus Mods account and we also recommend that you download the Nexus Mod Manager, Vortex.

By using Vortex, you allow your mods to be downloaded there instead of installing them directly into your game’s directory. Vortex also allows you to deactivate a mod and manage them more freely than if you go through your PC files.

On Nexus Mods, you can search for Hogwarts Legacy and then filter through all of the different mods that have been created for the game thus far. Simply pick one that seems interesting, click on it, and then you will be directed to its mod page. Here, you can read a description of the mod, but you want to eventually click the “Files” tab. Here, you can choose whether to download the mod into your Mod Manager and manually onto your PC.

If you choose the Mod Manager option, the mod will be installed through Vortex and you can manage it from there. However, if you manually download the files, you’ll need to go through your game’s directory. To find the directory, follow the steps below:

  • Find the game’s file in File Explorer on your PC
  • Open the Phoenix file, then Content, then Paks
  • Unzip the mod’s file and copy it into the Paks folder
  • Your mod is now installed

We recommend checking your game each time you download a mod. Sometimes, a mod can cause a game to crash, and if you wait to check the game until after you have downloaded a dozen plus mods, you won’t know which individual one is crashing the game.

We’ll put out a list of the best Hogwarts Legacy mods to download soon, but for now, you can check out some of our previous guides, like how to have a single name or get the Unforgivable Curses you might have missed.
