Skull and Bones is the long-awaited open world pirate game from Ubisoft, and it’s finally releasing worldwide on Feb. 16. Before some players get too excited about Skull and Bones, though, they need to know if the game can be played solo or not.
It’s no secret that Skull and Bones is designed around multiplayer gameplay. Similar to how Sea of Thieves operates, players are intended to captain the open seas with a group of other players searching for quests to complete and ships to plunder. While some of the community is certainly planning to fully partake in the multiplayer side of things, can you still access Skull and Bones by yourself?
Playing solo in Skull and Bones
There’s good news and bad news when it comes to playing solo in Skull and Bones. The good news is that the game is fully accessible as a solo player, meaning you can boot up the game, join a server by yourself, and play as normal. However, you need to always have an online connection to play Skull and Bones, as whatever server you join is full of other players; they just won’t be in your party.
The bad news about playing solo is that Skull and Bones doesn’t have a full, single-player campaign to complete. There are quests to complete, characters to meet, and lore to uncover, but Ubisoft has chosen to forego a full-on, narrative-driven story. Instead, the characters you meet offer contracts or other quests that can lead to individual stories across the open world map.

So, to sum up, you can play Skull and Bones by yourself, but you’ll never truly be alone, as all the servers you join will have other players. Also, you won’t be able to complete a campaign and “roll credits” on Skull and Bones. The game is what you make of it, which is why Ubisoft has designed it around multiplayer gameplay.
Although, it’s likely we will see future updates that introduce more single-player content. For now, though, I recommend embracing the multiplayer side of Skull and Bones, as you’ll likely find more to do in the game as opposed to going at things alone.
