The modding scene in Starfield has already taken off, with thousands of mods already available for PC players to download. One of the more popular mods so far is a DLSS mod that gives PC players the ability to replace AMD FSR2 with Nvidia’s upscaling technology in Starfield. This gives anyone with a Nvidia graphics card a massive performance boost without losing too much in the visual fidelity department.

However, there are some crashing issues with the DLSS mod in Starfield, leading to some frustrations in the community.

In my own experience, I tended to crash whenever I fast-traveled with my ship in space when using the DLSS mod. I would also crash at random times when running around a city, which would never happen before I downloaded the mod. While these crashing issues nearly forced me to uninstall the DLSS mod, I discovered some fixes for the crashes, which I will share with you in this guide.

Stop crashing with the DLSS Mod in Starfield

As a disclaimer, these crashing issues are simply a part of the growing pains process for an early mod of this caliber. Adding a completely new upscaling technology to a game like Starfield will undoubtedly come with a few problems at first. Luckily, I have been able to limit the number of crashes when using the mod by doing a few simple fixes. These fixes have been recommended by the creator of a DLSS mod, for reference.

I should also note that I’m using the Frame Generation DLSS-G Mod on Nexus Mods. However, these fixes should work no matter what DLSS mod you are using in Starfield. Here are the fixes you can try:

  • Cap your FPS limit by going into the Nvidia Control Panel (go to Manage 3D Settings, Add Starfield, and then scroll down in the options until you see Frame Rate Limit)
  • Turn off Dynamic Resolution in the Display settings of Starfield
  • Turn off Auto-Saves in the Gameplay settings of Starfield

I suggest you cap your FPS limit to the maximum refresh rate of your primary monitor. Also, you want to ensure you’re saving often in Starfield if you turn off Auto-Saves.

By doing these three things, I was able to completely eliminate many of the crashes I was seeing with the DLSS mod. While I do still crash every now and then, it’s a manageable experience compared to the one I was having after initially downloading the mod in Starfield.
