From the second you finish the opening cinematic in Diablo 4, the world is your oyster. You are able to level up and unlock skills, take on dungeons, follow the story, and discover what Sanctuary has to offer. You can even take on the world together with a friend from the get-go, either online or using Couch Co-Op. However, there is some content and other mechanics that are locked until later in the story. While technically one of those mechanics is the ability to salvage gear, the process to do this in Diablo 4 doesn’t take too long.

While selling gear is always an attractive option in an RPG, salvaging gear also comes with its own benefits as well. Players can earn extra resources by salvaging gear and they can also unlock a new appearance for their equipped gear, otherwise known as the Transmog system. So, when exactly are players allowed to salvage their gear items in Diablo 4? Read below to find out.

Salvage gear in Diablo 4

If you want to start salvaging your gear, you will have to wait until you reach at least level 5-6. At or around this level, you will be introduced to the town of Kyovashad. This town has several different vendors, and one of them is a Blacksmith, which is who you need to visit if you want to salvage any of your items, including both armor and weapons. The Blacksmith in Kyovashad can be located at the hammer and anvil icon, just south of the waypoint.

There isn’t just one Blacksmith located in Sanctuary, as you’ll find them all over the map’s various regions. The Blacksmiths will usually be in major cities and smaller settlements, but you’ll also find them at the end of Strongholds, among other locations.

To salvage a piece of gear, make sure you’re on the Blacksmith’s menu screen. Here, you can choose to individually salvage gear or press a single button to salvage every piece of unequipped gear in your inventory (excluding Legendary and Unique items). To make things even easier, you can mark items as Junk prior to salvaging them. This way, when you go to salvage gear, you can easily see what to get rid of.

Whenever you salvage an item, you will receive a small number of resources and whatever Gems were equipped on that specific item. Also, upon salvaging gear, that item will become available in the Transmog system. This means you can change the appearance of any equipped item into the appearance of the gear you salvaged.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to salvage some items, mainly those of legendary rarity. This also applies to items you have previously equipped with gems and quest items. So if you are unable to salvage an item, it’s likely because of one of those three reasons.
