Gems are one of the most crucial elements to any build in Diablo 4. All of them offer various bonuses to a piece of gear or weapon that instantly makes it stronger. You have a choice of six gems, and the skull, to insert into gear and weapons with a socket available. Not all gear comes with a socket, so you need to ensure that one is available before trying to add a gem to it.

Once you have inserted a gem into a gear socket, it will remain there for as long as you have the gear equipped or in your inventory/stash. However, some players have wondered if they are able to remove those gems in Diablo 4.

This is largely due to the fact that gems are valuable and players might need one for a newer and stronger weapon or piece of gear. Or, players might want to mix and match gems with different gear to see which bonus suits it better.

How to remove gems from weapons and armor in Diablo 4 - Dot Esports

The easiest way to remove a gem from its gear socket is to bring it to a Jeweler. These shops are spread out across the different towns in Sanctuary and are marked by the gem icon on your map. At the Jeweler, you can go to the “Unsocket” tab, which is the second tab from the left. Then, press the unsocket icon on the Jeweler’s side of the screen and click on the weapon or gear you want to remove a gem from. This costs a small fee to do, but you will safely have your gem back and your gear will be left unscathed.

Alternatively, you can salvage a piece of gear with a socket in it, and this will also remove the gem. Of course, your gear will be gone as well, so don’t do this unless you no longer want the gear. Extracting an Aspect from a piece of gear with a socketed gem accomplishes this goal as well.

Essentially, visiting a Jeweler is the safest way to remove gems in Diablo 4, but salvaging gear with a socketed gem works just as well. I usually salvaged gear with socketed gems up until the endgame, since I didn’t hang onto my gear for too long during the main story. However, you can do it anyway you want.
