Baldur’s Gate 3 is heavily inspired by Dungeons & Dragons so there’s no shortage of dungeons to explore. One of those dungeons is the Gauntlet of Shar, which is full of tasks and puzzles that you’ll need to get through to complete this area of the game.
Before you head out, add Shadowheart and Astarion. Then, find the Gauntlet of Shar in the underground section of Thorm Mausoleum. Follow the road and cross the river to reach Reithwin Town and then head north. Go past the graveyard and meet up with the devil Raphael. He will request that Astarion needs to defeat an enemy inside the dungeon.
How to solve the Mausoleum puzzle
The first puzzle within the Gauntlet of Shar is called the Thorm Mausoleum. Reach the top of the chamber and you’ll see a coffin with three murals. Avoid the traps around it by using Astarion to disarm them. Here’s how to interact with the murals:
- Splendor – The mural shows Moonrise Towers
- Tragedy – This one shows Thorm crying over his dead daughter
- Infamy – Thorm sits upon a throne looking at his audience with ill intent
When you interact with the murals in this order, you will open the doorway. Take the elevator to the Gauntlet of Shar proper.
How to solve the statue puzzle
At this point, you’ll see a statue holding an orb. Trying to approach it will not work.
Instead, pull the levers found on the walls. All the lanterns will be lowered. Once all the lanterns are lowered, extinguish their light. But make sure you don’t trigger any traps around you while you approach them. Do this avoid the glowing lines on the floor while crouch-walking. Now you can touch the orb and unlock the door.
Balthazar
At this point in the dungeon, you’ll have to fight against some Justiciar undead. Once they’re taken down, take note of a device on a platform. Then head down the left to fight more enemies. You’ll see a few other rooms, including a locked room to the north with several treasure chests and Balthazar’s lair on the left. Southward there’s a statue of Shar.
Where to find the Orthon
After that, head to the right. You’ll see a staircase with a Displacer Beast. Follow it to the antechamber, which is filled with bones. Not creepy at all. You’ll locate Umbral Gems here, which will come in handy in later quests.
Approach the throne and Orthon will appear. This demon has been trapped in the dungeon for hundreds of years. If you can’t convince it to stay in the dungeon, you’ll need to fight it and it’s quite tough. To avoid confrontation, tell Orthon you will try to help it and inquire about its contract with Raphael by passing a hidden Arcana check.
At this point, another Peruasion response will appear. Tell him his followers have to die. If you succeed, he’ll kill the Displacer Beast, which is sort of sad. Then you can tell Orthon to take himself out. Loot him for an Infernal Iron and the Hellfire Hand Crossbow.
The Gauntlet of Shar Trials
There are now four trials to complete in the Gauntlet of Shar, all located on the left side of the dungeon. You’ll have to interact with the Shar altar and direct Shadowheart to spill her blood. Each trial you complete will get you an Umbral Gem.
The Self-Same Trial has doppelgangers of your crew, using the same spells and attacks. Have each of your party members fight their clone if possible.
The Soft Step Trial is a Shadow patrolled maze. You don’t want to be discovered or you’ll be brought back to the entrance. Luckily you have Astarion with you to lockpick gates and disarm traps, keeping you undetected.
The Faith Leap Trial is in a dark room but you can almost make out some ledges. Unfortunately, they will disappear when you approach them. Head to the back of the room and slowly move to the center, eventually jumping to the ledge that has a statue. At this point the lights will turn on.
