How to change the time of day in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Sometimes you need to make the sun go up or down

One of the many features that Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has to offer is a full day and night cycle. This cycle happens naturally around the player as they play through the game. One moment it might be sunny outside and then when you emerge from a dungeon an hour later, it will likely be dark out. While players won’t always need to tinker with the laws of nature in Tears of the Kingdom, sometimes you might need to change the time of day around you.

This can be for a multitude of reasons, but I found it most useful when trying to trade with Koltin, the Bubbul Gems trader. He only appears at night, so I needed to consistently change the time of day to make him appear. If you want to learn how to change the time in Tears of the Kingdom, keep reading our guide below.

The easiest way to change the time of day is to make a fire and then rest at it. You can also find a bonfire out in the world to rest at, but making a fire is more consistent. To make a fire, simply throw Flint and Wood at the ground and swing at them with your weapon. Then, once you have a fire going or find one, you can interact with it and the option to change the time of day will appear.

Another way of changing the time is to rest at another location, such as your house, the Horse Inn, or any other Inn. Resting here will change the time of day to either day or night, depending on when you arrived. Starting a fire and resting at it will still likely be the most common way you change the time, though.
