Baldur’s Gate 3: How to save Volo from the Lower City fire barrels in BG3

Volo is a bard that you can first meet in Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3. He is first found at the Druid’s Emerald Grove, but then goblins capture him and he’s taken to the goblin camp in the northwest section of the map. If you chose to save Volo during this sequence, then he will become a permanent member of your camp.

Unfortunately, in Act 3 of BG3, Volo finds himself in trouble again, and you need to save him from peril for a second time.

In this instance, Volo has been tied to a railcar full of fire barrels, and a fire has been lit underneath him. Apparently, some of the locals are accusing Volo of being a heretic, and he needs to die for his sins. The first time I ran into this situation, I accidentally let Volo die because I didn’t save him in time.

Save Volo from the fire barrels in Baldur’s Gate 3

After the dialogue with Volo’s accusers ends, combat will likely start. Of course, if you let the accusers kill Volo during the dialogue sequence, then there won’t be any combat. Those who are keen on saving Volo will see some combat with the various enemies around the railyard, though.

While you will have around five or six enemies to deal with, my suggestion is to immediately try to get close to Volo. There are a few different ways you can get Volo off the railcar, but I used Gale’s Telekinesis spell to literally throw Volo off the platform and onto the side of the road.

The second way to save Volo is to actually get him off the railcar before combat ever ensues. You can use an invisibility spell or potion on a single character and have them not engage in dialogue with Volo’s accusers. Instead, they can hang back until your other characters are in the cutscene, go invisible, slip by the crowd, and then untie Volor from the fire barrels before anyone notices what happened.

Finally, you can also use Misty Step or Fly during combat and untie Volo when you get close enough to him. The one thing you want to be wary of is that if you wait too long to save Volo, then the fire barrels will explode, killing him in the process. So you need to get to him within two-three turns or he is as good as dead.
