The new update in Apex Legends brought not only the Grand Soiree Arcade Event but a slew of other meta changes and additional content. While most are interested in the new event cosmetics and balancing tweaks, there was an under the radar inclusion. Respawn Entertainment finally added a Tournament Mode for Apex Legends with yesterday’s update. Essentially, this is a private match system where players can make the rules. However, only professional teams/high-level creators have access at this time. That said, we do have some leaks that show us exactly how the mode works.
How Tournament Mode works in Apex Legends
This is a long-awaited feature in Apex Legends, as most other major battle royale titles have private matches. It’s unclear why Respawn waited this long to implement Tournament Mode, but professional players are glad it’s here.
While many might be disappointed it’s not open to the general public, it seems its availability will only be a matter of time. Respawn most likely wants to iron out all of the kinks and make sure the servers can handle mass amounts of players.
Although we don’t have direct access, there are leaks floating around that give us insight as to how Tournament Mode operates. Apex Legends data-miners @iLootGames and @That1MiningGuy show us just how private matches work.

To summarize what the files say, one administrator will receive a code to create a private match. The administrator can then invite up to 60 other players using a specific code. Once all players are in the match, the administrator can set certain settings, like who’s allowed on which team. The Tournament matchmaking system can be seen in the screenshot below.
This is obviously great for professional Apex Legends teams, as they can scrimmage in proper lobbies. However, there are some bugs with the mode, as some pro players have indicated. This is presumably why Respawn is holding off on giving access to the entire community.
As I've said before, we are not giving out public access to Tournament Mode at this time.
The purpose is to have a tool to run tournaments and (hopefully) pro scrims. We will be handling these internally for now, with an aim to scaling out over time.
