Twitch Rivals announces Halo: Reach tournament

Twitch has announced the latest edition of Twitch Rivals with a “Legends of Halo” series. The first event in the series takes place on Nov. 12, where past and current Halo professional players will team up with Twitch streamers in a Halo: Reach tournament.

Twitch Rivals tournament

For this event, Twitch has designated Eric “snip3down” Wrona, Tom “tsquared” Taylor, Justin “FearItself” Kats, and Tony “Lxthul” Campbell Jr. as team captains. A list of streamers participating in Twitch Rivals has not been disclosed, but there are many popular broadcasters who are former competitors and fans of the franchise.

Given that Twitch states this tournament will be the “First Event”, future events will likely focus on other franchise titles. This could include Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which consists of upgraded games like Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 4, and Halo: Reach.

Halo as an esport

While Halo may not have as large of an esports scene now, it is one of the titles that made esports what it is today in North America. Before games like League of Legends and CSGO, Halo was the introduction for many to the idea of competitive gaming. Players like Matthew “Formal” Piper and Ian “Enable” Wyatt, who have found success in the Call of Duty scene, actually originated from competitive Halo.

However, PC as a platform for esports quickly became more popular than consoles due to accessibility, among other advantages. While the much-awaited first-person shooter Halo Infinite is scheduled to be released in quarter four of 2020, it may not be able to bring back the esports scene and compete with the likes of Call of Duty, League of Legends, Overwatch, Dota 2, and CSGO.
