Hogwarts Legacy has been thrust into the limelight over the past week, showing off a 14-minute gameplay trailer during the recent Sony State of Play event. Fans were enthralled with what developer Avalanche Studios was able to present. The mechanics of the game along with some finer details were also showcased, giving fans a true glimpse into what they can expect come its release date. However, after watching the trailer, one specific stuck out in some fans’ minds: Will Hogwarts Legacy be an open world game?
The complete map of the game wasn’t showcased but a large portion of it was. The developers revealed that players will be able to venture all around Hogwarts, including going into Hogsmeade, along with going outside the castle grounds. This doesn’t necessarily answer the question of whether or not the game is considered open world, though.
Hogwarts Legacy will be open world
Fortunately for fans who are hoping for an open world experience, Hogwarts Legacy will set few restrictions on where players can go. It’s not clear what restrictions will be in place yet but it can be assumed that the castle grounds will be players’ only traversable area for the first part of the game.
Then, as players begin to develop their character and the main story, more parts of the map will open up. Players will likely have to complete several classes and activities within the Hogwarts campus before they’re allowed to go beyond the castle walls.
The open world nature of the game was confirmed by the website’s FAQ. The developers stated that “Hogwarts Legacy is an immersive, open-world, action role-playing-game set in the 1800s wizarding world, which puts players at the center of their own adventure.”
As of right now, we know that Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest and several towns outside of Hogwarts will be explorable. There’s no word on what else could be in store for players at the end of this year. However, if the most recent trailer is any indication, players should expect some more pleasant surprises.
