Speculation surrounding the long-awaited Overwatch series has finally ended, as Activision Blizzard revealed some serious leaks. Unexpectedly coming right from the horse’s mouth, Activision Blizzard Studios’ own President provided details about upcoming projects. From Call of Duty cinematics to a Diablo anime, he’s given Blizzard fans a quick look into the future.
An Overwatch-based animated series
Activision Blizzard Studios’ President, Nick van Dyk, released some important information about works in development on his LinkedIn page. Under his “Experience” tab, he posted an array of responsibilities including work in progress for an Overwatch series. “With my creative partner, developed and sold an animated series based Blizzard’s Overwatch franchise,” he wrote.
The specific creative partner is unknown, but the details seem solid. Whether they will feature it on a particular streaming network is also unknown.
Vice President of Blizzard Entertainment Jeff Kaplan has previously expressed interest in creating an Overwatch animated series. In a 2017 interview, he said, “We would really love to make something like a feature film or an episodic series. These are things that we’re very, very interested in.” This animated series might be a dream come true for fans. Each hero in Overwatch has their own lore and adventure that would be perfect for a series.
Blizzard’s Diablo series
Another rumor put to rest by van Dyk’s LinkedIn is the Diablo anime-style series. “Executive producer of Diablo, a TV adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s IP, rendered in anime style. The show is in pre-production for distribution worldwide through Netflix,” he noted.
In a now-deleted 2018 tweet, Hellboy screenwriter Andrew Cosby said the series was in the final stages of confirmation for Activision and Netflix. This year will excite Diablo fans as they embark on a new binge-worthy series of their favorite game.
Additionally, other leaks in the description discuss the possibility of a Call of Duty cinematic and television universe. The duties state he had “Secured development funding, developed writer compensation deals and oversaw negotiations to secure talent.”
Overall, the leak definitely brought some attention to the Activision Blizzard franchises. As Blizzard develops Overwatch 2, fans are looking forward to the upcoming series. We’ll keep an eye out for more information as rumors and further details develop.
