The last of the mono-colored gods was spoiled today, Thassa, Deep-Dwelling. Joining her is the blue demigod, Callaphe, Beloved of the Sea. Let’s take a look at some powerful blue synergies coming in Magic: The Gathering Theros Beyond Death spoilers.
Thassa, Deep-Dwelling
First found on Twitter, Thassa is back with a different take on the blue god. She’s a slight upgrade in power over the original Thassa, God of the Sea from the first Theros block. Her new ability might not feel much like a blue ability at first glance, but taking control of creatures permanently is pretty on point. Thassa’s last ability feels a little tacked on, but it is a good way to spend four mana when you need to push damage or stop a Questing Beast.
Thassa, Deep-Dwelling has a lot of potential in the current Magic Standard meta. She plays very well with Agent of Treachery, flickering the Agent at the end of your turn to be able to steal multiple permanents the first turn it comes down. She also has a synergy with cards like Act of Treason less likely to be played. Stealing a creature for a turn, hitting your opponent with it, and then permanently stealing it isn’t bad by any means, though maybe not the most viable strategy. Thassa will likely play well in a Simic Ramp shell, or even a Five Color Fires list. Once more of Theros Beyond Death is released, we could even see some sort of “enter the battlefield” trigger deck similar to the Yarok, the Desecrated decks that were running around shortly after Core Set 2020 released.
Callaphe, Beloved of the Sea

Here’s a powerful uncommon for mono-blue devotion lists to start brewing with. Callaphe, Beloved of the Sea has a power equal to its controller’s devotion to blue. With just Callaphe on the field, she is a 2/3, which is solid for a three-mana creature with a bonus ability. Spells that your opponents control targeting creatures and enchantments you control cost one more to cast. Suddenly a three-mana Murderous Rider / Swift End has to wait until turn four to target Callaphe. Callaphe’s major downside is that, like all demigods in the cycle, she is legendary.
