Epic Games removes swastika from Fortnite structure

This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

One of Fortnite’s most defining aspects is the level of customization the game offers to the players. From the character creation and different environments to creating and building different maps and structures. While players were recently experimenting with building during a match, they were shocked to discover a swastika symbol appear within their structure.

The swastika was the symbol prominently used during the Nazi Regime during World War II and is most commonly associated with the events of the Holocaust. When Reddit user /u/EuBestCityEu decided to build a dance floor, he noticed that editing the floor pieces together created a swastika symbol. After discovering this, he took to Reddit demanding answers from the game’s creators, Epic Games. The studio responded soon after.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. This was unintended and will be addressed ASAP by adjusting the metal piece art!

Epic confirmed to The Verge that they were indeed working on getting rid of the symbol so it will no longer appear in-game when players are experimenting with building new structures. The updated structure looks like this:

The existence of this glitch understandably shocked the community. A player attempting to build something and having it adorned by a hate symbol is clearly not something the Fortnite developers intended. After such a successful run through its first year going live, Fortnite does not need potential PR disasters like this slowing it down. Epic Games was smart to act quickly and nip this issue in the bud before it picked up any more momentum.

The removal of the controversial symbol was made as part of the Fortnite V4.4 Patch, which you can read about here.
