NRG Esports disbands Overwatch Contenders roster

NRG Esports, the owner of the Overwatch League franchise team San Francisco Shock, disbanded its Overwatch Contenders team. The North American esports organization announced it would release its roster and will no longer continue operations of the team.

The team has released the Contenders roster, which included Eoghan “Smex” O’Neill, Kevin “Kevster” Persson, Seo “Stand1” Ji-Won, Lee “Byrem” Seng-ju, Mark “Pookz” Rendon, and Chris “MirroR” Trinh. The organization has agreed to help find the former players new opportunities.

This roster achieved a fifth-place finish in the 2019 North American West league, which encompasses a total of eight teams. They lost to Team Envy, the Contenders team for Dallas Fuel, in the playoffs.

NRG Esports’ former roster

Eoghan “Smex” O’Neill is a British former Flex player for NRG Esports. He played for the United Kingdom for the World Cup 2017 and 2018. Some of his main heroes include D.Va, Zarya, and Roadhog.

Kevin “kevster” Persson is a Swedish former DPS player for NRG Esports. He joined the organization in October of last year.

Seo “Stand1” Ji-won is a South Korean former Tank player for NRG Esports. Some of his main heroes include Reinhardt, Winston, and D.Va. He has also played for South Korean team Foxes and CONBOX.

Lee “Byrem” Seong-ju is a South Korean former flex support player for NRG Esports. He joined the organization in October 2018 and has previously played for South Korean esports organization BlossoM.

Mark “Pookz” Rendon is an American former Support player for NRG Esports. His main hero is Lucio, and he has previously played for Gladiators Legion. He joined the roster in February of this year.

Chris “MirroR” Trịnh is a Vietnamese former DPS player for NRG Esports. His main heroes include Zarya, Doomfist, and Junkrat. He has also competed under teams like One.PoinT and Second Wind.

Another Overwatch Contenders slot

NRG Esports’ disbandment of their Contenders team means one more spot in the North American West league. NRG first signed the original Contenders roster after they left Luminosity Gaming when the team’s contracts expired. A former Team Liquid player also joined the former roster.
