Minecraft is finally getting a fourth dimension.
The Sift was revealed at Minecraft LIVE on September 26. It joins the Overworld, the Nether and the End, and it’s the first new dimension added to the main game in more than 14 years.
Dungeons II players get there first
The Sift will be playable before it reaches Minecraft itself. It’s part of Minecraft Dungeons II from day one, and that game launched on September 29.
In Dungeons II, mysterious rifts across the world transport players into the new dimension. Mojang describes it as beautiful, vibrant and full of souls.
Rifts were first teased in August alongside Dungeons II, giving players an early glimpse of strange landscapes and the threats on the other side.
It’s also tied to the story. Dungeons II begins in Bravehaven, where players help Villagers find a new home. Then things start to go wrong: new enemies appear, souls fly through the environment and the natural order breaks down. As soul corruption spreads across the Overworld, the trail leads back to The Sift and the forces coming out of it.
What’s inside
The Sift has its own:
- Biomes
- Mobs
- Hazardous blocks
- Environmental effects, including shifting tides that affect nearby players and characters
Two areas have been shown so far: the Meadows and Carapace. Mojang is keeping the rest for players to discover.
When it comes to Java and Bedrock
The Sift arrives in Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027. No exact date has been announced.
Plenty of questions remain about how it will work in the main game, from how players will reach it to how its tides and hazards will translate outside Dungeons II. For now, Dungeons II is the only way in.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma also shared a teaser for The Sift on X.
