One of the greatest prizes that trainers can encounter throughout their journey in any Pokémon game is the Master Ball. Trainers often receive one right before an encounter with the game’s Legendary Pokémon in order to help them add a powerful beast to their team.

Despite being a hallmark of the main series since Generation 1, this special type of Poké Ball has been absent in the mobile game Pokémon GO up to now. However, this powerful item will soon debut in the game for the first time. Here’s how you can get a Master Ball in Pokémon GO.

How to get a Master Ball in Pokémon GO

The Master Ball will become available in Pokémon GO through Special Research during Season 10: Rising Heroes. Upon completing the final story of this season’s free Special Research, trainers will receive a number of rewards, with the Master Ball included among them.

Trainers will be able to begin working on the final story of this season’s Special Research starting on May 22 at 10 a.m. in their local time zone. To be eligible to receive a Master Ball, trainers will need to claim the Special Research before Season 10: Rising Heroes ends on June 1 at 10 a.m. local time.

As a result, players will have less than two weeks to get to work on the final portion of the Season 10 special research before the reward will expire. Players should keep this limited window of time in mind as they work toward obtaining a Master Ball.

How does the powerful Poké Ball work?

In the main series Pokémon games, the main appeal of the Master Ball is that it can catch any Pokémon without fail. For this reason, trainers could simply select it from their bag in order to get a guaranteed catch on a shiny Pokémon or a Legendary that would otherwise be difficult to catch.

Of course, catching Pokémon works a bit differently in Pokémon GO. Instead of selecting an item from a bag, trainers have to physically fling their Poké Balls, which opens them up to missing the Pokémon completely or hitting it during an animation in which it is immune to capture.

However, it is likely that the Master Ball will work in Pokémon GO the same way it did in Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! In those games, using the Master Ball triggered a cutscene that allowed the trainer to catch a Pokémon without aiming and throwing the Poké Ball like they would normally have to.

Most Pokémon games only allow trainers to obtain one Master Ball per playthrough. Similarly, it seems this season’s Special Research will only reward players with one version of the ultimate Poké Ball. Nevertheless, The Pokémon Company’s official announcement suggested that there will be future opportunities to obtain this item in Pokémon GO, albeit rare ones.
