While Nintendo has changed the way Technical Machines (TMs) work in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the core loop of acquiring them has remained the same. Players will usually have to trek across the map to find a certain TM that can turn a good Pokémon into a great one. Like in past games, once players use a TM, it will disappear from their bag. However, in Scarlet and Violet, players can make the same TM if they have enough of the necessary materials. One popular TM that players will be chasing in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is Surf, one of the stronger Water-type moves in Paldea.
Surf is one of the oldest moves in all of Pokémon, being introduced as a Hidden Machine in Generation I. Nintendo has scrapped the HM system in recent years, but the moves that were on the HM list have remained. This includes Surf, which is a 95 power, 100 accuracy Sp. Attack Water-type move. It’s always a powerful move for Water-type Pokémon, as it has 15 power points and can be learned by a wide variety of Pokémon.
In order to find the Surf TM in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, players will have to look near the water. Or, on it, to be more exact.
Finding the Surf TM in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
To find Surf, you will need to make your way to Porto Marinada; the city is located in West Province (Area Two), just on the coast, west of Cascarrafa and the Asado Desert. Players will most likely travel to Porto Marinada after trying to battle the Cascarrafa Gym. The Gym Leader will not be there and players will have to travel to the port to give him his lost wallet.
Once players are in Porto Marinada, they need to go past the Auction House, which is the brightly-lit pavilion in the center of town. Go past it to reach the ocean, which is parallel to a walkway. Along this walkway, there will be a few different boats sitting in the ocean. On one of these boats, you will see a yellow Poké Ball, which means it contains a TM. This TM is Surf. Use your Koraidon or Miraidon to jump onto the boat and secure the TM. You can then find the TM inside your bag and teach it to any of your Pokémon that can learn it.
It should be noted that there are several locations to find the Surf TM in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. You can also find a copy of the TM in Levincia (near some barrels on the south side of the city) and out on an island in the South Paldean Sea.
