Will Baldur’s Gate 3 have DLC?

Baldur's Gate 3 developers Larian Studio apparently want a DLC too.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has such great story and interesting characters that players are already hungry for more. Some really want a DLC to extend their adventure. While you can play BG3 in many different ways and make each of your playthroughs unique, new content is always welcome to change things up. Developer Larian Studios, however, doesn’t seem ready to release a DLC yet.

Here’s everything we know about a potential Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC.

Is Baldur’s Gate 3 getting a DLC soon?

Baldur’s Gate 3 will not get a DLC or expansion soon, but may get one in the future. Larian wants to do more content for the game, but “we don’t know what yet”, their senior product manager said in an interview in August 2023.

So either Larian Studios is being very secretive and building up some hype for a Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC or their team has just started brainstorming it. So, don’t expect to see any new content in the game in the coming months, either free or paid.

What to expect from a Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC

To be realistic, there’s nothing to expect from a Baldur’s Gate 3 expansion yet. Larian is not actively working on one as of October 2023, so anything you might have read up to this point is likely speculation.

The best we can do is join the speculation and assume Larian’s history with Divinity: Original Sin 2 could point toward the future of Baldur’s Gate 3. If that was the case, the studio could add new content to BG3 in the form of new areas and quests to complete, all in a big patch free for all players. But again, as far as we know, that’s not happening anytime soon.

What content is off the table for a Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC?

A potential Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC will probably not increase characters’ level cap up to 20, which is the maximum in D&D 5e. Larian confirmed that doing so would give characters an absurd level of power, and the studio would need huge development effort to implement this change and turn it into an interesting campaign.

It likely means that any new Baldur’s Gate 3 content would look more like a new side-story rather than an expansion of what happened after Act 3 in the main questline.
