Mortal Kombat 1 is the next installment of the bloody fighting game franchise. Some fans of the series are a bit confused about its name, however. Why is it called Mortal Kombat 1?
Mortal Kombat 11 came out in the spring of 2019 and fans have been anxiously awaiting the next one in the series. Not only is Mortal Kombat popular for its violent punishments and intense gameplay, but it’s very well known for its interesting lore — which even inspired some movies. So what does it mean that the next one is not Mortal Kombat 12 and is instead called Mortal Kombat 1?
Is Mortal Kombat 1 a remake?
The first Mortal Kombat came out in 1992. Is Mortal Kombat 1 a remake of this classic game? NetherRealm CCO Ed Boon has already confirmed that’s not the case.
Mortal Kombat 1 is not a remake but a reboot.
Why is it called Mortal Kombat 1?
Boon discussed the title of the newest Mortal Kombat game in a Kommunity Chat after the game was initially revealed. He explained that this game takes place at “the beginning of a universe.”
It’s not a continuation of the Mortal Kombat 11 story. It’s a completely different timeline for the iconic characters, who all have a new role and storyline.
“This is Mortal Kombat 1. It is a brand new beginning,” Boon said. “You’re going to see the characters reintroduced into their new roles, with new relationships with each other, and that’s the main catalyst for calling it Mortal Kombat 1,” Boon said.
So basically, Mortal Kombat 1 takes all of the iconic characters we know and love, but has them in an entirely new plot instead of continuing the plot of Mortal Kombat 11.
