Why was Mortal Kombat Annihilation so bad?

Mortal Kombat Annihilation has been trending but not for the right reasons.

Mortal Kombat 1 has the fighting game community hype. The violence and bloody action has a chokehold on the Mortal Kombat fanbase. But while looking at older games and movies, players came across Mortal Kombat Annihilation and discovered it’s a terrible film.

With so much hype around MK1, it’s not a surprise that players are looking for old content to digest. But many are saying to skip Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Here’s why.

What is Mortal Kombat Annialation?

This PG-13 action film came out in 1997. It was inspired by the world of Mortal Kombat but didn’t hit the same. A portal opens up between the Outerworld and Earth, allowing Emperor Shao-Khan to travel to earth with his warriors in an attempt to dominate and unite the two worlds. Sony Blade, Jax, Kitana, and Liu Kang prepare to take Shao-Khan down.

Why is Mortal Kombat Annihilation so hated?

Annihilation has a 4% critics score on Rotten Tomato and a 24% audience score. Why is it so low? The general consensus is that the special effects are campy and hard to watch, the acting is subpar, and — worst of all — the fight scenes were disappointing. The PG-13 rating and $30 million budget are probably big factors.

Read some reviews:

“With CGI worse than in the video games it’s inspired by, acting at the same level as in a kindergarten stage play and about as much depth as the led in a pencil, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is hilariously bad and ridiculously brainless.”

“Not just one of the worst video game adaptations ever but simply one of the worst movies ever.”

“One of the worst sequels to ever be greenlit. This movie is a painful reminder of how NOT to adapt a video game franchise. I was only 13 when I first saw this and I hated it back then too.”

Should you watch Mortal Kombat Annihilation? I’d say no. But it could be fun with some friends and some popcorn.
