Ultra Instinct Shaggy headlines new platform fighter MultiVersus

Warner Bros enters the competitive platform fighter market with this free-to-play title in 2022

In an ironic twist, Shaggy Rogers from Scooby-Doo has gotten into a smash-like game before Goku from Dragon Ball. Ultra Instinct Shaggy will be joining a star-studded roster of Warner Bros. intellectual property in the all-new “MultiVersus” platform fighter coming out in 2022.

Alongside Shaggy, the initial gameplay trailer for MultiVersus showed off many other popular characters such as Batman, Superman, Finn and Jake, Steven Universe, Tom and Jerry and many more. The game will be cross-platform and a free-to-play title featuring dedicated rollback netcode. Player First Games are taking the lead on the development of MultiVersus and this is the companies first title.

Voice acting and Teamfighting are MultiVersus’ main draws

The new platform fighter enters a stacked market. After the announcement of the final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character, Sora, the floodgates opened. With Smash signaling the end of its development, other companies started to pounce on the opportunity and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl released shortly after. MultiVersus is now entering against NASB, Smash and other competitors like Brawlhalla and Rivals of Aether. To separate themselves from the crowded pack, MultiVersus is heading into a more team-oriented experience.

In a video narrated by game developer Tony Huynh, he shared that Multiverses will lean into a more social-but-competitive feel. Emphasis is heavily on the 2v2 mode for this initiative. Characters feature special moves and their primary use is to help partners out. An example of this in the video showed Batman having a smokescreen that can cover his teammate’s movement.

“We built the game from the ground up for teamwork and co-op,” Huynh said.

All MultiVersus characters are fully voiced, many by their iconic original voice actors. Some of the already announced roles include Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, Jeremy Shada as Finn and Tara Strong as Harley Quinn.

Currently, MultiVersus doesn’t have a hard release date. However, the game will be entering closed beta in the near future.
