Everyone has been curious what could possibly be the next set for Magic: The Gathering Standard. Could we be going back to Theros? Lorwyn? New Phyrexia? It seems we have a strong none of the above for those predictions. Instead, it appears we’ll be going to a brand new plane entirely in Throne of Eldraine, leaked via photos and now confirmed.
The set appears to be based around faeries specifically. Worth noting is that for once there is no Planeswalker depicted. This a refreshing change and could indicate a return to Magic‘s core roots: fantasy and immersion in its world. The set will have its prerelease Sept. 28-29.
As far as what is in the set, expect faeries battling for some kind of throne, perhaps a war within a kingdom. However the form, there will be a power struggle drawing on (hopefully) classic high fantasy elements.
Possible reprints
With a faerie-themed set, we could possible reprints of some of the most popular faerie tribal staples. Bitterblossom immediately comes to mind, but it might just be too powerful for Standard. Faerie Trickery is a likely reprint, being well-balanced counterspell that’s three mana. For other creatures that are possible, any of the wide variety of blue faeries could come back, such as Spellstutter Sprite. If you want to speculate on these cards dropping or spiking, now might be the time to do so.
What do you think of Throne of Eldraine? Is there a certain theme you’d like to see represented, or do you want more Planeswalkers and less fantasy?
