The first Pokémon Legends: Arceus tournament approaches in March

The tournament format will be announced at a later date

Pokémon Legends: Arceus doesn’t include any way to face other players in epic Pokémon battles, but that won’t stop die hard fans, players and streamers from finding a way to compete. Streamer Pokemen7 and Wolfe Glick, the 2016 Pokémon Video Game Championship (VGC) champion, are doing that by hosting the first Arceus tournament on Mar. 5, 2022, according to their Twitter announcement.

Glick, who will cast the event alongside Aaron “Cybertron” Zheng, says that the tournament format will be announced at a later date. The tournament will most likely focus on who can complete a task within Arceus, like catching a specific Pokémon the quickest or most efficiently. Tournament organizers could also rely on a third party tool, like Pokémon Showdown, to have players fight with Pokémon they catch in Arceus.

“We’ll be formally announcing the format in about a week,” Glick said. “I want to make sure to finish testing it before I say anything publicly, in case things need to change.”

The first Pokémon Legends: Arceus tournament

Arceus is majorly a singe player adventure. There are some ways to interact with other players, like trading Pokémon or collecting satchels that other players drop when they black out, but they are passive. Pokémon VGC is sticking to previous Pokémon entries and will not include Arceus in any way.

The open world adventure with a heavy emphasis on exploration is a new direction for Game Freak. The new take on Pokémon, while not without its flaws, has been incredibly popular. It sold 6.5 million copies – more than Sword and Shield at launch – a week after its launch on Jan. 28. The success is a great way for Pokémon content creators and pro players to stay in the lime light in between tournaments.
