A new item will be coming to Fortnite with Aug. 27’s v10.20 update. Thanks to the in-game news section, we know this item is named the “Shield Bubble” and will protect you from enemy projectiles. The v10.20 update arrives tomorrow at 4 a.m. EST, though there will be some required downtime. Along with the Shield Bubble, Epic Games is planning on fixing some bugs in-game and doing some balancing. There will also be a new location or biome in the southeastern part of the map as the Rift Beacon claims another POI.

Where does the Shield Bubble fit into Fortnite?
Before it even releases, there are some clear pros and cons to the Shield Bubble’s function in Fortnite. Protecting from enemy projectiles brings one thing to mind, and that’s the B.R.U.T.E. While not the greatest counter in the world, a protective bubble does give you a fighting chance against the mech.
In addition to being a mech counter, the item also helps in the late game, especially in competitive. If you’re in the final circle and need to heal for a few seconds but your box is being shot, a Shield Bubble will grant those precious seconds.
However, this new item also further negates the aspect of building. There’s not too much of a point to build to secure an advantage when you can throw down a force field. Epic Games seems to keep pushing these types of items that hinder building (Junk Rift, Air Strike, etc.).

Although, the Shield Bubble should be overall balanced. It will work similarly to Apex Legends’ character Gibraltar’s shield; you can throw it down and nothing can penetrate the shield, but enemies are free to enter the bubble and shoot you from there.
Depending on how long this bubble lasts for, this should be a controversy-free addition to Fortnite. Though, you never quite know with Epic Games.
