Roster moves continue after NBA 2K League expansion draft

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Three days after the NBA 2K League held its expansion draft for its latest franchises, another round of roster moves from the league’s teams surfaced on Monday and Tuesday. The moves included roster retentions for players who were not taken in last week’s expansion draft and trades to fill needs after the draft.

When the league announced rules regarding player protections pre-expansion draft, it also provided post-draft rules. Teams had the weekend to reevaluate needs. Monday became the day additional roster moves would set off a domino effect in the league.

Some of the moves below have yet to be officially announced on the league’s official transaction tracker, but they have been posted in some form on the league’s social media.

Roster retentions

NetsGC retained Isaiah “Wavy.zay” Hancock for 2020 to open the roster moves of the week. The point guard joins 2019 teammates Nathaniel “NateKahl” Kahl and Aziz “Shuttles” Salem on the roster. Hancock closed last season with 15.1 points and 5.8 assists per game. His skill set opened the offense for NetsGC but also had a tendency to turn the ball over. The Bronx native averaged 4.3 turnovers a game.

After seeing its center go in the expansion draft, Warriors Gaming Squad chose to retain forward Jin “Jin” Choe on Monday. Choe becomes the fourth player rostered for the Warriors. The team protected Alexander “Bsmoove” Reese, Charles “CB13” Bostwick, and Samuel “Gradient” Salyers back in September. Choe shot 61.7% from the field while averaging 5.5 rebounds and 10.7 points last season.

A trade of Robert “May” May to Magic Gaming left Pistons GT some roster freedom. That freedom led to the team retaining Joseph “Joseph” Marrero. Although not flashy on the stat sheet, Marrero was consistent and smart down low. The big man scored 12.1 a game while providing 4.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.6 steals in 2019.

NBA 2K League early week trades

Cavs Legion GC and Raptors Uprising GC completed the first trade of the new week. The Toronto squad used a retention slot for Frederick “Doza” Mendoza to trade him to Cleveland for a second-round pick in next season’s NBA 2K League Draft. Mendoza averaged 11.0 points and 6.1 assists for Toronto in 2019.

Originally protected by Heat Check Gaming, Stanley “MaJes7ic” Lebron was traded by the team to Blazer5 Gaming for a first-round draft pick. The addition of Lebron gives Blazer5 Gaming four players on the roster, while Miami has just one player. Lebron closed his year with 10.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists a game.

Pistons GT made another move on Tuesday when the team received Johnathon “Demon JT” Fields from Wizards District Gaming from a second-round pick. Fields struggled in 2019 compared to his performances in the league’s inaugural season. The guard averaged just 8.3 points and 5.0 assists per game, while giving up 3.1 turnovers.

Expected to be moved after reportedly requesting a trade from Hawks Talon GC, Randolph “Rando” Moreno got his wish on Tuesday. Hawks Talon GC traded the guard to NetsGC for a first-round pick. Moreno was second on Atlanta for scoring with a 14.7 average. He also averaged 4.1 assists per game.

Tuesday concluded with possibly the most surprising trade of the offseason. Knicks Gaming sent Dayvon “G O O F Y 7 5 7” Curry to Grizz Gaming. The two sides swapped future draft assets with Memphis gaining 2020 third-round and 2021 second-round picks. Knicks Gaming received Grizz Gaming’s first two picks in the 2020 draft and 2021 first-round pick. Curry earned a reputation for being one of the better centers in the league. He averaged a double-double in 2019 with a league-leading 14.9 boards and 14.4 points.
