How to turn off and customize quick chat in Rocket League Sideswipe

"What a save!"

Quick chat in Rocket League and Rocket League Sideswipe can be good fun and incredibly useful when used correctly. In the main game, many players keep chat on at all times, while some use quick chat or team quick chat to avoid toxicity.

In Sideswipe, quick chat is less necessary than in the main game, so turning it off should not hamper you too much if you choose to turn chat off altogether.

If you just want a chill Rocket League Sideswipe session without chat, here’s how to turn it off.

How to turn off quick chat in Rocket League Sideswipe

Turning off quick chat in Sideswipe is simple, but tedious. Once you enter an online game, tap the cogwheel at the top right of your screen and select “mute quick chat.” Unfortunately, you’ll have to do this every time you enter a game and you can’t do this until the three-second countdown for kick-off starts. So, you’ll have to be fast or simply score a banger yourself, throw them a “What a save!”, and then quickly turn it off while you have time.

For now, this is the only way to do it, but Upcomer reached out to Psyonix to ask whether the developer is creating a more permanent option.

How to customize quick chat

If you’re on the opposite side of the spectrum and want to chat, you can customize the quick chat options to your liking.

To edit your Sideswipe quick chat options, first tap your banner at the top of the screen in the main menu. Then on the next screen, tap the edit button next to your banner. In the row of icons at the top, tap the speech bubble.

Here, you can select your currently equipped quick chat options on the right and replace them with new ones on the left. Or, if you see one you like on the left, you can select it, then tap a place on the right side where you want it. Simple!

Main game chat options

Unlike Sideswipe, standard Rocket League has more options, like all chat, quick chat only, team quick chat only and team chat only. However, with the use of mods like Bakkesmod on PC, you can also turn off chat entirely, except quick chat at the kick-off. This is useful for communicating on who goes for kick-off, while avoiding any other kind of chat during the rest of the game.

To do this, install Bakkesmod. Then, when in-game, press F2 to open the UI. At the top of the row, click the “Anonymizer” tab and tick “Switch to quickchat only mode during kickoff.” Even when you have chat turned off, this option will allow you to quick chat with your teammates during kick-off.
