Notable Misses

It’s hard to argue against the players listed above. Pretty much all of them are regarded as some of the best players to grace the World Cup. The list does raise some eyebrows with regards to players featured and left off. For example, Jay-Jay Okocha.  A great player with exceptional skill, who was a star in the EPL, didn’t do that much in the World Cup. Zero goals in nine matches for a second striker isn’t great, but his impact was his movement and setting up the goals. He is regarded as a great player, but for me, he isn’t a World Cup great. For me, someone like Toto Schillaci is a prime example of a World Cup icon. A relative nobody, Toto burst onto the World Cup scene leading the tournament with six goals.

Now I know FIFA needs to obtain licensing agreements to feature players, so that may have been an issue along with others. But still, its hard to have a list of World Cup icons without these names:

P.s these players are in no particular order. I am just going off my vast soccer knowledge.

  • Franz Beckenbauer
  • Gianluigi Buffon
  • Paolo Rossi
  • Zinedine Zidane
  • Cafu
  • Carlos Alberto
  • Paolo Maldini
  • Jus Fontaine
  • Gerd Muller
  • Joan Cruyff
  • Antonio Carbajal
  • Dino Zoff
  • Bobby Charlton
  • Paul Gascoigne
  • Gheorghe Hagi
  • Roger Milla
  • Fabio Cannavaro
  • Mario Kempes
  • Gabriel Batistuta
  • Gordon Banks
  • Thomas N’Kono
  • Michel Platini
  • Eusebio
  • Romario
  • Xavi
  • Raul
  • Oliver Kahn
  • Toto Schillaci
  • Fernec Puskas
  • Zico
  • Franco Baresi
