When Paladins developer Hi-Rez Studios released Realm Royale a few months ago, it became an option for players stressed out over Fortnite. Realm Royale, a new offering, was poised to grab a share of the battle royale market. A lesser-known title with a smaller community which features somewhat similar mechanics — that’s a recipe for pro gamers and would-be star Twitch streamers. Unfortunately, it seems as though that initial fanfare has passed and the honeymoon period is all but over. In just two months, the Realm Royale player base has dropped from over 104,000 in June to a scant 6,000 in the last 24 hours. That’s almost 100,000 players lost in a short time period. And from what we know about the battle royale genre, it’s that a bigger player base accounts for more success.

Realm Royale – Is the fan fever gone for good?

Make no mistake, Realm Royale isn’t a perfect game. Then again, few games ever are. While it has a ways to go before reaching the pinnacle, it still provides a fun romp for dedicated fans. In fact, some of those fans are our very own contributors, such as Alexandra Madden who regularly streams it on our official Twitch channel.

Providing an alternative to the juggernaut that is Fortnite and the second-placer PUBG will be a tough road. Not only will fans clamor for the type of coverage, tweaks, events, and fixes that these games have, they’ll also no doubt make comparisons. Because Realm Royale is following a tried-and-tested formula, it’s both a boon and a bane. The formula for battle royale success, set in stone, makes it a boon since players will readily flock to it. On the flipside, it’s a bane because it will cause players to make the switch a lot faster than usual. That happens when another game does things better or has more eyes on it. The casual player base is very fickle when it comes to trying and testing these free-to-play offerings. You can never truly tell which ones are in it for the long haul.

The Realm Royale tournament endorsed by Keemstar and Skillshot Media is a good start to keeping the product alive. Then again, how do you differentiate yourself from the pack while trying to get more eyes on the product? You’ve got similar systems, and pretty much some of the same big names in the spotlight. We can only hope that Hi-Rez Studios figures out how to get the most out of their game. After all, losing 100,000 people in your player base is no joke. Likewise, we also applaud its dedicated fanbase, the happy few who remain, who are keeping the dream alive.
