Polish president Andrzej Duda joins TikTok to promote “Grarantanna Cup”

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Amid the current coronavirus pandemic, the Polish government is creating its very own esports tournament, the “Grarantanna Cup,” to further convince students to stay in their homes. The nation-wide Cup is hosted by ESL Play and includes tournaments in FIFA 20, CSGO, Brawl Stars, and League of Legends. What’s more, Andrzej Duda, president of Poland, has joined TikTok to promote the event, which kicks off later this month.

Grarantanna Cup to keep kids at home with gaming

The esports tournament is part of the “#zostanwdomu” campaign, meaning “stay at home”. The twist is that the campaign now embodies a “stay at home and play” meaning, thanks to the nation-wide event.

The Grarantanna Cup is aimed at middle and high school students. Only they can participate in any of the tournaments, as university students are not allowed. The event is made possible alongside the Polish Ministry of Digital Affairs, which was established five years ago.

Players can take part in the following games and formats:

  • FIFA 20: 1vs1 on PlayStation 4
  • CSGO: 5vs5 competitive and 1vs1 Aim Cup
  • Brawl Stars: 3vs3 format
  • League of Legends: 1vs1 and 5vs5

Each title has its own open qualifiers where participants rack up points. The top teams or players are then eligible for the finals for their game.

In addition, the cup features enticing prizes. This includes an array of gaming equipment such as monitors, mice, headsets, and chairs.

Polish president goes on TikTok

Perhaps the biggest surprise is not the cup itself but rather the appearance of Andrzej Duda, president of Poland, on the social platform TikTok. He posted a video both there and on Twitter to further promote the Grarantanna Cup.

I have personally translated the president’s short speech from Polish to English:

“So this is TikTok? Am I on TikTok? Of course, you’re studying hard right now… But sport is also needed…esport. I invite you to take part in Grarantanna Cup organized alongside the Ministry of Digital Affairs. Link in the description.”

The quite amusing TikTok clip has garnered quite the popularity, amassing nearly 400k likes and over 3 million views in just two days.
