The Nintendo Switch hasn’t even been out very long, but it sure made an impact this past decade according to Time magazine, who ranked Switch among the 10 best gadgets of the decade. It’s no surprise since when it first came out in 2017 many like me had to wait months to even get their hands on one.
Upon the launch of the Nintendo Switch, it did not have many major titles. The main selling point for it at that time was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, followed by the revamped Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The library grew steadily with time though, and both hardware and software sales have been impressive. Incidentally, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate just won an award at The Game Awards 2019 this week for Best Fighting Game.
Here’s what TIME Magazine had to say about the Nintendo Switch:
When it comes to gaming on the go, no one can top Nintendo’s track record, beginning with the humble Game Boy in 1989. But the introduction of its hybrid Nintendo Switch in 2017 — which you can play either portably or connected to your TV — might be the company’s most important contribution to gaming yet. Compared to the competition, it handily takes the crown as the most important video game console of the decade, with fans begging developers to bring their next title to the Switch. Its smartphone-inspired portability, paired with Nintendo’s ever-growing library of blockbuster, independent and vintage titles, makes the Switch feel like the culmination of Nintendo’s idea of what gaming should be.
I agree with every statement made. When we finally got the Nintendo Switch, it’s really what the Wii U should have been. Now we have the Nintendo Switch Lite for those who prefer handheld gaming over console gaming, and it’s likely only a matter of time before a “Pro” model is announced.
As we head into a new decade of gaming, things can only get better.
