Overall Thoughts

I haven’t been too critical for the first two batches of FIFA 19 player ratings, but this batch has raised many questions for me. As I said in my previous article, it’s hard to be super critical of the “best” players in the world. For the most part, their cards stay the same, and they mostly receive small upgrades/downgrades. With regards to this batch though, I have a lot of questions.

FIFA 19 centre-back ratings

The first is about the centre-back ratings, and this includes Varane, Koulibaly, Piqué, and Thiago Silva. These ratings confused me. To start, Thiago Silva should not be rated 88. He has been a good centre-back over the last couple years, but it’s clear he’s not the same player he was in his Milan days and early PSG days. To me, he deserves a rating of 86. The same goes for Piqué and Koulibaly. Also, there is no way that Koulibaly should be rated higher than Varane. If anything, Varane should be ranked 87, same as Umtiti, and Koulibaly should receive an 86. Varane has been consistently one of the best centre-backs, and he just came off a World Cup victory with France. Koulibaly is coming off another great year with Napoli, but to have him higher than Varane doesn’t make sense to me. Also, I really can’t complain about the ratings of Vertonghen and Umtiti. Vertonghen has been long overdue for an upgrade, and Umtiti just won the World Cup, so he was bound for an upgrade.

Striker ratings for FIFA 19

Next up are the strikers, which include Aubameyang, Immobile, and Icardi. After a bad first season with Arsenal, it was pretty clear that Aubameyand would receive a downgrade. Receiving a one point deduction, 87 is still very generous considering the year he had. I think that an 86 would have been more than fair. Another striker who I feel deserves a slight downgrade is Immobile. He has been the top scorer in Italy for the last two years and thoroughly deserves an upgrade, but 87 is too high. He is money in the league, but when it comes to playing for Italy, he is a bum. An 86 would also be a fair rating for him. To end, let’s look at Icardi. For me, he deserved a substantial upgrade from FIFA 18. For the last three years, he has averaged 20 goals and is a top striker. To me, 87 is a low rating for him, and he deserves an 88. Icardi has been a consistent goal scorer for five years now, and he should be rewarded.

Last call

My last complaint is with regards to the ratings of Iniesta, Hamšík, and Navas. My overall complaint about all these FIFA 19 player ratings is that I feel they are off by one or a couple points. I know that may be small margins, but I’m just being honest. Iniesta is one of the best players to ever play the game, and while it’s clear he’s still got it, time is catching up with him. Let’s not forget that he decided to cash in and play in Japan. Doing this is seen as a cop-out for many players, and we’ve seen EA downgrade a lot of players for this decision. So if they want to be consistent, then Iniesta deserves a downgrade. For me, a rating of 86 would be more than fair. Keeping with the midfielders, next up is Hamšík. He was overlooked for the longest time, but his rating of 87 is a little high for my liking. By EA’s standard, he’s on the same level as Iniesta, Rakitić, and is better than Fernandinho and Pjanić. I think a rating of 86 is fair. To me, he is on the same level as Pjanić, so if Pjanić received an 86, then he should as well. Lastly, we have Keylor Navas. Over the last couple of seasons, his form has dropped a bit, but he still is a good goalkeeper who can win you games. But in my opinion, 87 may be a little high. Is he that much better than Alisson? I don’t think so. I probably sound like a broken record, but 86 would be perfect for him.

Well, that went a little longer than I had intended. Let me know below if you agree with me or think I’m a total idiot. Make sure you check out more of our FIFA 19 content. Also, be sure to come to check out the next batch of FIFA 19 player ratings.
