This morning, Wizards of the Coast revealed their trailer for the brand new Magic: The Gathering set: War of the Spark. They revealed 17 spoiler cards, including several Planeswalkers, and showed us a trailer which raises some concerns for the health of one of our favorite Planeswalker characters during the events of War of the Spark: Liliana Vess.
Liliana’s Story
Liliana has been a staple Planeswalker in Magic: The Gathering for several, several years. We’ve seen her through the lens of multiple planeswalker cards, and even several story spotlight cards in the set Magic: Origins.
We know that, as a young woman, Liliana was tricked into poisoning her ailing brother when she meant to heal him. The distress of this scenario ignited her Planeswalker Spark and empowered her already growing interest in Necromancy. Through her search for power and eternal youth, she entered a deal with four demons (Griselbrand, Kothophed, Razaketh, and Belzenlok). Of course, this deal backfired and she was enslaved by the demons. As a result, we saw Liliana go on to kill each of these demons one by one throughout the story. Eventually, this led her to the true power behind her contract: Nicol Bolas. Bolas is the main villain of the current Magic: The Gathering story arch.
Returning to the light
In the trailer above, we see Liliana being used by Nicol Bolas to control his army of zombie warriors from Amonkhet. But Liliana isn’t one to be controlled. We see the conflicted Planeswalker stop and reflect. She looks back on all the damage she’s done and the innocents she’s hurt. It’s obvious that she’s overtaken with a sense of regret. She decides to betray Nicol Bolas for the good of her friends and commands his own army to rush him. Of course, Bolas does not seem too fond of this decision. He turns his powerful gaze towards her and we see his eyes ignite with fury. At this point, it look as if Liliana begins to burn alive.
Whether she survives or not, we’re left to guess. We know that she is immensely powerful, but she doesn’t come close to the strength of older planeswalkers like Nicol Bolas, Ugin, or Sorin. Maybe this is the end for her. Maybe it isn’t. It’s possible she isn’t burning at all and is instead undergoing a transformation. We’ll have to wait to find out more as Wizards of the Coast slowly rolls out the story and new spoiler cards.
New War of the Spark Liliana Planeswalker Card
During the spoiler reveal earlier today, we got to see a brand new card for Liliana: Liliana, Dreadhorde General. The art depicts her controlling Bolas’ army, the Dreadhorde.
