Mortal Kombat movie skins added to Mortal Kombat 11

If you’re anything like me, and I apologize if so, then you have very fond memories of the original Mortal Kombat movie from 1995. In an era where films like Double Dragon were the best we were getting from live-action video game adaptations, Mortal Kombat stood head and shoulders above the rest. Mortal Kombat was not ashamed of its source material — in fact, it embraced it.

There was much love and attention to detail in the casting, the set design, and most importantly, the fights. All of this made the movie feel like it leaped right out from the arcade. Although the movie was a bloodless PG-13, fans over the years still hold it in extremely high regard. Even in an age with movies like Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog, which seemingly broke the “video game movie curse,” many still view Mortal Kombat as one of, if not the, best video game film adaptations.

Back when the first Kombat Pack was announced for Mortal Kombat 11, it was revealed that Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, who played Shang Tsung in the film, would reprise his role in the game. NetherRealm used his likeness and voice for both the young and old versions of Shang and it was a hit. This further proved how much love fans have for that first movie (and just the first one). Now NetherRealm has doubled down on that fan love and introduced three new costumes to the game also from the film.

As confirmed by the PlayStation Twitter account, Bridgette Wilson, Linden Ashby, and the Highlander himself, Christopher Lambert, are all lending their likeness and voice to these new costumes. Island Bound Sonya Blade is from Sonya’s fight against Kano on Shang Tsung’s island. Hollywood Kombatant Johnny Cage is from Johnny’s earlier scenes in the film. And Chris Lambert is in full regalia as Earthrealm Raiden.

The skin pack is available as a separate purchase for $5.99 and contains all three of the costumes. It really is great to see these actors return to these roles. And for long-time fans of the series, it’s a treat. Also, as an extra bonus, Sonya’s voice acting is no longer terrible. If you haven’t watched the original Mortal Kombat movie in a while, go give it another watch. It still holds up in all its cheesy, 90’s goodness, just like the games they come from.
