Magic: The Gathering’s Secret Lair brings adorable cats to the game

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Wizards of the Coast has finally revealed what the Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair project is, starting with the adorable OMG KITTIES box. OMG KITTIES is one of eight boxes that will be releasing every day starting Dec 2, though this will only be the final box of the set. Called a sub-brand by Wizards, Secret Lair is a celebration of some of the most popular cards in Magic. The boxes will only be available for 24 hours after launch.

Each box will be unique, having been built “from the ground up to be a home for the stranger, more experimental, more unexpected cards that we think some players will love but don’t fit into our sets and other products,” according to Wizards Product Architect Mark Heggen. Secret Lair is also an opportunity to work with artists that would not normally be featured on a Magic card. “We’re working with street artists, comic book artists, traditional Magic artists working with very non-traditional art briefs, album cover designers, and on and on and on. It really is a chance to welcome new artists and styles into the game, which is a big part of what makes this all so fun.”

OMG KITTIES will retail for $39.99 and will be available directly from the Wizards of the Coast site. The prices of the boxes will vary, either $29.99 or 39.99 depending on the box. There is also a Secret Lair Bundle that will be available on Dec 2 for $199.99, which will include all eight boxes.

Magic Secret Lair KITTIESHere is the full schedule and title of each box:

Each box contains four to eight cards and tokens, some of which will be foil. Along with the premium cards, each box will also contain code for both MTG Arena and Magic Online. In Magic Online, players will receive digital copies of the cards. Meanwhile, Arena players will receive sleeves, as most of the cards are not available in-game.

Wizards also confirmed that more Secret Lair boxes will release in the future, though they do not have a set timeline for these. Magic recently released another themed set with Ponies: The Galloping, a My Little Pony crossover box sold earlier this year.

While Wizards has had issues with meeting demands for unique and special Magic products in the past, Secret Lair boxes will be printed to demand.
