Modern Horizons spoiler season is continuing to wow MTG players as new and exciting cards are revealed. We’ve seen some crazy new Slivers, the continuation of the Swords of X/Y cycle, and much more. Now, however, we have something very interesting: a Commander card printed into Modern. Today, we introduce a non-foil version of Kess, Dissident Mage.

A non-foil printing
Kess, Dissident Mage was originally printed in Commander 2017 and only as a foil card. This caused many issues in competitive formats since foil cards warp and bend very easily. This led to someone actually being issued a game loss in a competitive setting because their copy of Kess was warped to the point of being noticeable. Usually, you could just run the non-foil version of a card in this scenario. But… Kess only had the foil printing at the time.
Modern Horizons will not only bring Kess’ unique power to Modern, but also put non-foil copies of the card into the hands of competitive Commander, Legacy, and now Modern players.
Kess in Modern
If you read Kess’ ability, it may seem familiar. That’s because the ability is very similar to the ones seen on Snapcaster Mage and Mission Briefing. While Kess costs significantly more than Snapcaster, the effect remains strong. Plus, unlike Snapcaster, you can use it every single turn she’s out.
Kess would allow Grixis-oriented control or midrange decks to recast spells such as Kolaghan’s Command or Collective Brutality from their graveyards. While by no means an instant staple, her showing up in these style of decks would not be surprising.
Stay tuned!
Kess’ move from Commander to Modern is huge news for a lot of people, and we have more where that came from over at our MTG news page! This week’s spoilers have just started up, so make sure to keep an eye out!
