Is PSN down? How to quickly check the PSN server status

Why can't you get online?

The PlayStation Network (PSN) is the service that every PlayStation uses to get online every single day. Regardless of which PlayStation console you’re using, you will need access to PSN’s services if you want to get online. This applies to single-player and multiplayer games as well as a browser or the PlayStation Store.

While the service is working a majority of the time, there are instances where PSN has gone down in the past.

If this happens, it’s bedlam in the online world of the PlayStation community. Players are wondering if their own internet connection is to blame for their inability to get online while others are worried that another 2011-esque hack on PSN has occurred. Most of the time, the service’s servers have simply been overloaded or Sony is doing maintenance. Random outages also occur, and there’s no way to tell when those will happen.

Whatever the case may be, though, players should know how to check and see if PSN is down for themselves.

The best and official way to see the status of the PSN servers is to visit PlayStation’s website. Specifically, you can visit the status page for the system, which lets you know what parts of PSN are currently up and working or down. You’ll see either a green checkmark or a red “X” next to the following services:

  • Account Management
  • Gaming and Social
  • PlayStation Video
  • PlayStation Store
  • PlayStation Direct

If there’s a green checkmark next to the service, then it’s working properly. However, a red “X” means that there’s some kind of problem and players may not be able to access that particular service at the moment. This page updates frequently, so players shouldn’t have to check anywhere else to see if PSN has gone down or not.
