How to separate Calyrex from Glastrier or Spectrier in Pokémon

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

So, you’ve completed the main Legendary Quest in The Crown Tundra expansion for Pokémon Sword and Shield and you caught Calyrex. If you didn’t already know, catching Calyrex will also get you either Glastrier or Spectrier, depending on which carrot you chose to grow.

Both Calyrex and Glastrier or Spectrier will be in your Pokédex upon catching it, but you can also split the two up and use them separately. Here’s how to do it.

Separating Calyrex from Glastrier or Spectrier

Remember the item you had the mayor of Freezington and Peony make you earlier in the quest chain? The Reins of Unity allows you to separate the two Pokémon and put them back together. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Put Calyrex in your party
  2. Make sure there’s an open spot in your party
  3. Open your bag and go to your Key Items bag
  4. Find the Reins of Unity and select “use this item”
  5. Select Calyrex and the two will split

Once the two are split up, you can merge Calyrex with either Glastrier or Spectrier again by using the Reins of unity on it while both Pokémon are in your party.

Why separate them?

Calyrex is far stronger while merged with one of the two steeds, but you currently can’t use the merged version in rated battles. You also might want both Pokémon in your party to use separately. Calyrex, Spectrier, and Glastrier are all strong Pokémon on their own as well with different typings.

When merged with Glastrier, Calyrex is Psychic/Ice-type. When merged with Spectrier it is Psychic/Ghost-type. On its own, it’s just Psychic-type, while Glastrier is Ice and Spectrier is Ghost. Their stats also change when separated. These differences offer different strategies while battling.

You can also, of course, separate them to trade if you want. Either way, you can always merge them back together, so be sure to experiment with the two of them and see what you like best.
