If you’re a newcomer to the CRPG genre or the Baldur’s Gate franchise, you likely have dozens of questions about how everything works in the third entry of the series. One of the first questions you might have is why some of your spells go dark on your hotbar and become unusable after you use them in or out of combat.
If you hover over your spells in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will see that they need a recharge, but no other information is offered.
Naturally, you will begin to wonder how you can recharge them so you can continue using them in combat. Or, perhaps you’re a healer and you need to heal yourself or an ally outside of combat, but your healing spells are all unusable. Either way, learning how to recharge your spells and other attacks in Baldur’s Gate 3 is vital to your success.
You can see exactly how to get your spells and attacks back by reading the guide below.
Recharge spells and attacks in Baldur’s Gate 3
On your HUD, you will see your spells and attacks spread out all across the hotbar at the bottom of the screen. Just above the spells and attacks, there are some smaller squares with different icons. Some of these squares will have blue squares on them as well as a Roman numeral.
By hovering over these, you will see that these squares tell you how to recharge your spells at each level. The square with the Roman numeral “I” are your level 1 spells, and it will tell you that you can recharge any level 1 by taking a short or long rest. Hovering over each individual spell or attack will also tell you how they are recharged, which is usually by either taking a short or long rest.

Regardless of if you have a spell that is recharged by a short or long rest, you take both of them in the same way. On the far right side of your hotbar, you will see a campfire icon. Click on that icon to bring up three choices: take a short rest, take a long rest, and return to camp.
Taking a short rest heals you and your party immediately by recharging any spells that require a short rest. Taking a long rest will bring you to your camp, where you can reset the day by clicking on a bedroll by the fire. This fully replenishes your health and all of your spells and attacks.
You now know everything about recharging spells and attacks in Baldur’s Gate 3. It will take some time to learn which spells are rechargeable through the two types of rest, but you should get the hang of things quickly.
