The annual World of Warcraft Running of the Trolls event returns this Pride month in support of The Trevor Project. This year, Running of the Trolls takes place on the Feathermoon-US server on June 18 starting at 9 p.m. ET.
How to participate in Running of the Trolls
Dravvie, the event organizer, advised interested players to be at the Troll starting zone ahead of time for invitations and a beach party.
To participate, all a player has to do is roll a new Troll character. Soon after, they should receive an invitation to one of three World of Warcraft guilds, named either Running of the Trolls, Troll for Initiative and Trollkyo Drift.
Those who have never played World of Warcraft yet can also join the Pride month celebration by getting a US trial account. Although trial accounts don’t allow guild invites, players can still run alongside other attendees.
What to expect in the World of Warcraft event
The Pride month event begins at the Troll starting zone, where players will take a zeppelin to Tirisfal before running through the Plaguelands. Next, attendees use the Ghostlands portal and aim for Silvermoon City.
World of Warcraft players are encouraged to share the celebration with others as they travel through Azeroth during the Running of the Trolls event. Players can share their experiences using the #TrollRun2022 hashtag on social media, livestreaming the event or making a video. The organizer’s only request for streaming and video content is that they should share a link to the The Trevor Project fundraising page.
Celebrating LGBTQ+ players
Dravvie shared in an interview that the annual Pride month event shows that there are members and supporters of the queer community in World of Warcraft.
“While many people have pride events they can just attend in real life, there’s restrictions for many, such as work, disability, countries not holding them, distance, but also not being out of the closet,” Dravvie said. “Families are able to go together, people run in honor of friends.”
Dravvie also noted that the Running of the Trolls event highlights a sense of community and players get to share their experiences as LGBTQ+ individuals. “I’ve been told a few times now, by individuals [who] were questioning their sexuality or just allies at that time, that the event gave them the courage to explore who they are or to come out,” Dravvie said in the interview. “It makes me really happy, and even happier to get to watch them blossom as people.”
In addition to participating in the run itself and sharing moments on social media, videos or livestreams, players can join the event’s Discord server.
