Epic Games has announced that all players will be able to obtain a free TIE Fighter Whisper glider in Fortnite. The in-game cosmetic skin is part of an ongoing promotion between Fortnite and Star Wars. Other new additions include skins like the iconic Stormtrooper, along with new characters like Finn, Rey, and the red Sith Trooper variant.

Free TIE Glider
The original promotion between the two brands consisted of players taking part in a Star Wars premiere event at the in-game Risky Reels location. The plan was to feature legendary filmmaker JJ Abrams talking to digital attendees and also showing a clip from the movie. Epic Games Worldwide Creative Director Donald Mustard revealed at The Game Awards that everyone would receive a free TIE Whisper Glider with their participation.
However, technical problems occurred, with the servers crashing just minutes before. That subsequently led to a delay. While it eventually did happen, many in the community were disgruntled about missing out. To fix this, Epic Games will give players the Star Wars TIE Fighter Whisper Glider for free just by logging in to Fortnite. Players have until Dec 15 at 8:00 p.m. ET to do so. That’s tonight, so don’t wait on this!
Targeting the Fortnite generation
This in-game promotion is the latest one after previous partnerships with upcoming movies like John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and Avengers: Endgame. The 18 – 24 age range makes up 62.7% of Fortnite‘s distribution of players, according to an April 2018 report by consumer statistics firm Statista. The 25 – 34 age range accounts for another 22.5%. This puts a large percentage of Fortnite‘s audience at the same age range as the consumer base targeted by media companies.
With the popularity of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and now Disney+, fewer of these people are making the trip to movie theaters, which make money on concessions. It’s no doubt a large factor in why major film franchises have partnered up with Fortnite like this.
