How to find and complete The Variable exotic quest in Destiny 2 Lightfall

A hidden quest starts with a little puzzle

A new exotic quest is now available from the Destiny 2 Lightfall campaign — The Variable. However, to even begin the mission, a puzzle needs to be completed. Here is a rundown of how to acquire and complete The Variable exotic quest in Destiny 2 Lightfall.

It all begins in the EDZ

To start The Variable quest, drop into an area not used in Destiny 2 Lightfall: the European Dead Zone (EDZ), in the spawn location close to The Gulch. You should see lots of floating Vex boxes scattered throughout The Gulch when you go through it. This is where the puzzle begins.

To get the access code, acquire all six boxes from across The Gulch. After collecting the first, you have 30 seconds to get the next one. It refreshes every time you collect a box, so move quickly to access all six. Some are in more tricky spots than others, but it shouldn’t take long for you to find all six and get them quickly.

When completed, it seems a lot of Vex energy is building in the EDZ, with a giant portal now in the sky.

Start the quest

To get the mission, simply go to where the portal’s opening is. It should lead to a little cave, one where a region chest already lies in. But, just past it, a new opening should be available for you to go deeper into the cave.

Alongside that, you’ll get a message from an ally asking for your help. Then, drop down and find a Vex harpy, where your exotic mission lies.

It’s a tough mission, with recommended power at 1800. However, if you’re a bit underdeveloped, your equipment will be temporarily scaled to 1790 for this quest.

After accepting, you’ll get this unique Lightfall quest in your Destiny 2 Quests tab. Simply complete the mission and the rest of what the questline offers to get the exotic at the end.
