As soon as players begin their journey in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, they will immediately recognize the combat if they’ve played any Soulsborne title or the Nioh games previously. The combat system relies on dodging and deflecting oncoming attacks while you wait for the perfect time to strike. Players have access to both melee weapons and a variety of magical spells to deal damage to their opponent. However, before players can truly master the combat and take down enemies with efficiency in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, they need to learn how to deflect attacks properly.
Most Soulsborne veterans will likely tell you that the best offense is a good defense when it comes to this style of combat. That basically means you need to be able to ward off enemy attacks successfully before you can start dealing a ton of damage consistently. Not only does deflecting attacks help with taking down a single, large enemy, but it also helps with taking on several enemies at the same time.

Deflect attacks in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
The default keybind to deflect an attack is the following:
- F on PC
- Circle on PlayStation
- B on Xbox
The best way to learn how to deflect an attack is to challenge enemies one at a time. This will allow you to not get overwhelmed and learn the mechanic easier. Once you have your single enemy, wait for them to attack. As they are just about to hit you, press the deflect keybind and your character will rebuff their attack. This will knockback some enemies and stun others, depending on how strong they are. Stronger enemies won’t feel as much of an effect from a deflect as weaker enemies will. Also, if an enemy is using a critical attack, you won’t be able to deflect, so simply use the dodge move in that instance.
As you might expect, different enemies will have different timings when it comes to their attacks. You need to figure out what enemies do right before they attack so you can properly predict when they are going to move in to deal some damage.
After you have gotten the hang of a simple deflect down in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, you can practice the deflect counterattack. This mechanic requires you to press an additional button at the same time as the deflect keybind. You don’t need to do anything differently, though, so use the deflect mechanic as usual. Instead of simply knocking back or stunning an enemy, you will launch a powerful attack against them right after deflecting their move.
The combat system in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty will take a while to get used to, especially if you’re newer to these types of games. As with anything, though, practice makes perfect.
