After years of waiting, Garruk is finally back in Magic: The Gathering. Fans of the planeswalker have been begging for the character to return. Breakdown

For six mana in black and green, Garruk, Cursed Huntsman is a legendary planeswalker with 5 starting loyalty. His 0 ability seems to support Garruk tribal strategies. You make 2 2/2 wolfs that protect your planeswalkers and upon dying put loyalty counters on all your Garruks. His -3 is solid removal that draws you a card, and his -6 is an overrun. Overrun ultimates on Garruk planeswalkers are pretty standard fare, so no surprise there. Pretty much every iteration of the character has had some form of the ability on his card.

How good is Garruk, Cursed Huntsman? In standard, he seems fantastic. You can easily ramp into him with green acceleration. At worst, he kills creatures and draws a card; a solid 2 for 1. At best, he makes an army of wolves your opponent can’t deal with and eventually makes the wolves huge to attack for game with. He will definitely see play in some form of green/black creature deck in Standard. As for eternal formats, he is a bomb but at 6 mana he’s most likely too slow. You could have fun playing him in a Garruk tribal deck in Modern though if you’re feeling spicy.

Regardless of playability, it’s great to see Garruk back finally after years of waiting. It’s a cherry on top to see the card be so playable too. What do you think of Garruk, Cursed Huntsman? Do you plan on building a Standard deck around him? Or do you want to try building Garruk tribal? Let us know down in the comments below!
