Fortnite v11.50 update introduces Chaos Engine and Search and Destroy mode

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Perhaps the last big Fortnite update before Season 2 has arrived, with v11.50 now being live for all players. This was a highly anticipated update, as fans are anxious to see what Epic Games has up its sleeve for Season 2. As with any big update, there are always leaks involving upcoming skins, game modes, and events.

However, while there are some exciting leaks, there’s not a ton of content to be found within v11.50. Instead what we have is a watered-down version of the Chaos Engine that has brought a slew of new bugs to Fortnite.

The Chaos Engine in Fortnite

When Epic Games delayed Season 2 until February 20, they also announced that the Chaos Engine would play a role in Fortnite going forward. Powered by the Unreal Engine, this new system allows for the destruction of structures on a massive scale.

We expected the Chaos Engine to be included with Season 2, but not many anticipated it arriving today. Although, according to leaks, the new engine is in-game to an extent.

With this revelation, many fans expected to jump into Fortnite and have pieces of wood and brick go flying whenever they shot a building. However, that isn’t the case at all. What’s instead in the game are a couple of game-breaking bugs, like the one below.

We’re not 100% sure if this is the Chaos Engine at work or just a random bug that came with the v11.50 update. In any case, this update has been in the works for several weeks, so a bug of this caliber shouldn’t have made it through testing. Epic Games has yet to comment.

New content in the v11.50 update

On the lighter side of things, there is some fresh content for the community. Fortnite announced on its Twitter that a new Search and Destroy mode is available to play. Coming with the mode is a new set of challenges, “Love and War”, and the chance to earn some free cosmetics.

On the data mining side of the content, we received a sneak peek at the upcoming Harley Quinn skin. This is part of the Birds of Prey crossover event which should start tomorrow, February 6. Data miner @HYPEX has a closer look for us.

That’s about it for the v11.50 update! There are no official patch notes as usual, but we’ll let you know if any more leaks surface.
